Dental Implants, Bridges, & Crowns Q & A

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial or prosthetic teeth which are fused with a patient’s jaw using special titanium posts. These implants are designed to be exceptionally strong and stand up to all the pressures exerted on a normal tooth. They also look and feel just like a natural tooth.

How are Dental Implants Placed?

Dental implants usually require three trips to the dentist’s office. During the first appointment, the posts are implanted into the jaw. The post is then given time to fuse with the patient’s jaw bone. This usually takes several weeks. At the second appointment, an impression is made of the area where the missing teeth will be replaced. This is then sent to a lab so the crown or artificial tooth will be made. Finally, the new prosthetic tooth will be attached to the post and gently shaped so that it fits properly.

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is a dental device which is used to span the gad between two or more teeth which have been removed or lost. Bridges rest on top of the teeth on either side of the space. The teeth on each side will be protected by using dental crowns or coverings which surround the tooth’s visible surface and make it stronger.

How are Bridges Applied?

Bridges usually take to appointments two place. During the first appointment, the teeth on each side of the gap will be shaped to make room for the application of crowns. An impression of these teeth will be made to ensure the bridge fits between the gap. Temporary crowns will be placed on the surrounding teeth while the permanent crowns are being made. The second visit will see the permanent crowns adhere to the surrounding teeth using a strong dental adhesive. The bridge is then attached to these teeth. The bridge can be removable and attached with clips or it can be permanent and held in place with more adhesive.
